A gear pump is a type of positive-displacement rotary pump that moves fluid by trapping it between rotating gear teeth and the pump casing. As the gears unmesh at the inlet, they create suction that draws in the fluid, which is then conveyed around the gears and expelled under pressure as the teeth re-mesh. This action provides a smooth, consistent flow proportional to rotational speed, making gear pumps ideal for precise metering of high-viscosity fluids. Common designs include external (two identical external gears) and internal (an internal and external gear) configurations. Invented around 1600, they remain widely used in hydraulic systems and chemical processing.
